October 2008—Ginger (Zingiber officinalis)
Ginger is a spice which is used in cooking, most commonly in Asian cooking, in the form of peeled and sliced portions of the root of the Ginger plant. The Essiantial Oil used in aromatherapy is steam distilled from unpeeled, dried, ground root of the ginger plant. Ginger is a very pungent, stimulating energy source whether is is from ingestion of the root or from the Essential Oil.
Ginger is a warming agent, and a tremendous stimulant of the circulatory system as well as the digestive system. As a digestive aid ginger can be eaten as a spice included in your meat and or vegetable dishes, and there are several types of candies made from ginger root as well as an extensive array of teas that are available through a large number of marketing industries. This use of ginger for the digestive system has been used effectively since the middle ages to relieve stomach and abdominal cramps, nausea, colds and flu symptoms, morning sickness during pregnancy and motion sickness. Ginger has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to deal with Yin conditions of internal and external moisture imbalances which include the effects of winter weather and its cold damp aggravation of rheumatoid arthritis and muscle aches and pains.
