The Senses

The Senses - There are five of them, eyes, ears, nose, taste buds, sensory receptors. I’m reminded of the three monkeys sitting on the bench I see nothing, I hear nothing and I say nothing with each hand over the part of them that would do each of the following. Yet, I would say that the most important of them is the sensory receptors which allow us to respond to stimuli such as touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. The sensory receptors and microscopic receptors which are also located at the tips of the dendrites of sensory neurons. The general sense organs are microscopic receptors which are located throughout the body widely distributed throughout the skin, muscles, tendons, joints and other internal organs. These microscopic receptors are responsible for sensations such as pain, temperature, touch and pressure. Oh, and don’t forget the most poinet of them all the sense of pleasure.

Special sensory receptors are also placed in various locations throughout the body to send signals to the brain for the sense of smell, taste, vision, hearing, and equilibrium. When the body experiences a stimulus such as taste or smell an electrical signal or nerve impulse is fired. The electrical impulse is then transmitted in the nervous system pathway to the brain, the brain then perceives of the stimulus. Different types of sensory receptors are all over the body and have various different functions. Paciniam corpuscle for instance is a general sense organ which allows us to perceive the sense of pressure.

Specialized receptors found near the point of a junction of a joint or muscle tissue are called propriocepters. When these receptors are stimulated, they provide us with information concerning the position or movement of the appendages of the body. When golgi tendon receptors are stimulated, they provide the body with information concerning the length and extent of the contraction and tension in our muscles. These are the two main examples of proprioceptors in the body.
