Digestive System GI Tract

The gastrointestinal tract, each of us has inside plumbing it stretches from the mouth to the anus and flows through several organs of the body in the abdominal cavity. There are two names for this tract which is a hollow tube approximately 29 feet in length they are the alimentary canal and the gastrointestinal tract. What does the digestive system do? It breaks down food by chemical and mechanical means to use the nutrients in the body.

There are three different types of processes that the food goes through during this process they are digestion, absorption, and metabolism. The organs along the alimentary canal that assist in this process are the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and appendix. Through the canal the hollow tract is a lumen the five layers of the lumen are the mucosa, sub mucosa, muscularis, and the serosa from the inside layer to the outside layer. Muscles are used to push food long the tract in wavelike motion. This rhythmic contraction of muscles is called peristalsis and works in conjunction with parasympathetic nervous system.

Digestion beings immediately upon food entering the mouth in the form of chemical reactions, salivary amylase is secreted inside the mouth with keeps the mouth moist and lubricated so that food can being the process of digestion.
