Leukopenia is a condition of abnormally low White Blood Cell counts in the blood stream and are usually less than 5,000/mm3 of blood. Leukocytosis is the opposite condition where the body has an abnormally high White Blood Cell Count of more than 10,000/mm3 of blood. An a pathology of extremes is leukemia which is a malignant disorder is which the number of White Blood Cells increases to amounts that are off the charts.
Platelets become sticky at the point of incision or injury and accumulate near an opening in the broken blood vessel. Platelets are very important factor in the body’s ability to heal and repair the integumentary system, from the subcutaneous layers all the way to the epidermis. Vitamin K sometimes prescribed before surgery which help to ensure a patients blood will clot quickly to prevent hemorrhage.
Thrombus is a clot that stays in the place that it was formed, the condition is called thrombosis. If a clot becomes dislodged in the circulatory system is very dangerous and can be lethal. A clot that dislodges in the blood stream is called an embolus which will then move through the circulatory system and can clog vital organs of systems of the body which require constant blood flow. This condition is called an embolism and needs immediate attention. The substances which can activate the immune system are called antigens or immunoglobulins.
Types of blood that can be a universal recipient has type AB, and the universal donor of blood is said to have type O. When a mother’s Rh antibodies react with a baby’s Rh-postitive cells it is a disorder that is called erythroblastosis fetalis. Something that all expectant mothers should be careful of when having children with a father that has a blood type that is incompatible with the mother.
