This article is intended for massage therapist that are working towards taking their national certification test.

The spaces or cavities indies some of the cranial bones are called sinuses, which we have four pairs of these and can be found in the frontal, maxillary, sphenoid and ethmoid bones of the skull. The four pairs of sinus cavities that are found in the frontal, maxillary, sphenoid, and ehmoid bones are called paranasal sinuses. Inflamation of the frontal sinus cavities due to mucous membranes becoming inflammed and swollen is called frontal sinusitis.

The name for immoveable joints is called sutures. The immovable joint between the pariental and occipital bones is called the lamdodial suture, where as the immovable joint between the pariental and temporal bones and part of the sphenoid bone is called the squamous suture. Yet, the coronal suture is between the pariental and the frontal bones of the skull. In a child the six soft spots on the baby’s skull where ossification is incomplete is called frontonels, ossification of the bones of the skull is often complete by age two(2).

The whole in the vertebral column is called the vertibral foramen. The number of curves in the spine is four(4). The spine is curved in both convex and concave for an adult. This is not true for a newborn. The cervical and lumbar areas of the spinal are concave. The thoracic and sacral curves of the spin are convex curves of the spinal column.
