Integumentary System VII

The final segment of this system. This is intended for massage therapist for review and students which need to pass the national exam.

The four functions of the skin are protection, temperature requlation, sense organ, and chemical activity. The skin protects against hazzards, invasion of microbes, tears, cuts, chemicals, and uv rays.

The treatment and recovery from burns depends on the total area involved and the severity of the burn. The severity of the burn is determined by the depth and the area covered by the burn. The most frequently used method of determining the extent of the burn injury is the rules of nine(9). The type of burn with minor discomfort and reddening of the skin is called a first degree burn.  In a first degree burn there are no blisters with this type of burn. A second degree type of burn involves deep epidermal layer and upper layer of dermal damage. A second degree burn would include damage to hair follicles, sebaceous glands but dermis is not competely destroyed. A second degree burn with blisters, will be accompanied by severe pain, swelling, fluid loss and often scaring.  The third degree burn will encompass the complete destruction of the dermis layer and epidermis.  The third degree burn after involves he muscle being damaged.

Tinea is also known as fungus.

Apocrine is the order producing sweat glands.

Rickets is caused by the lack of vitamin D in the body or a deficieny in being able to produce Vitamin D.

Dermititus is the inflamation of the dermis.

Decubitus Ulcers are known as bed scores and can be caused by the lack of movement and sanitary conditions in a bed. It is also caused by the lack of blood flow to areas of the skin because of pressure placed on a localization of the skin.

Kaposi sarcoma is a skin cancer that is also associated with AIDS.

Malignant melanoma is a malignant neoplasm that involves melanin-producing cells.

Tinea Gorposus is also known as ringworm.

Subcutaneous injection is given with a hypodermic needle.  

Ceruminous glands are glands that produce ear wax and are found in the external auditory canal.

Pleurisy is the information of the of the serous membrane inside the chest cavity. Perieitalitus is the inflamanation of the serous membranes of the abdominal cavity.
